The free pilot that isn't a pilot

A school wants to try your product for a term. Brilliant. But a pilot with no measure, no end date and nobody who can say yes isn't a trial. It's a very polite way for everyone to avoid making a decision. Before anything goes in, get four things on paper: 1. What you're measuring, agreed with the school in their language. 2. The date it ends, with the review meeting already in the diary. 3. The person who makes the call, by name. 4. What happens if it works: the contract that follows, when it starts and where the budget comes from. If a school won't agree to those, that isn't failure. It's the most useful information you'll get all term. Your turn: have you got a pilot running right now? Which of the four is it missing? Tell us in the comments.
